Helen Mildred Luther Perkins, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at the age of 98 at her home in American Fork, UT.
Helen was born on April 23, 1917 in Eldorado, KS to Oscar Luther and Minnie Mae Hurt. She was one of seven children.
Her family moved a few times before finally settling in Rochester, MN, where she lived until she graduated from high school. Upon finishing school she began working until World War II broke out.
At that time she felt her life wasn’t too exciting, so when there was a push for new recruits for the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corp (WAAC), she enlisted.
During basic training, she had an appendicitis attack. While she was recuperating, her company shipped out, so she was sent to Will Rodgers Air Force Base and assigned to be the secretary to the Post Inspector General, where she was soon made a corporal.
This is where a handsome young soldier named DeMar Perkins came into her life. Eventually they fell in love and were married on March 18, 1944.
Their first son, Larry, was born in Rochester, MN. When the war ended, they moved back to DeMar’s hometown of Monticello, UT. There, they had two more children, Dan and Kristine, and they then settled into many years of enjoying life in southern Utah.
During this time, Helen worked at various jobs, including a position as a job specialist at the ASCS Department of Agriculture for 24 years. Eventually she retired from this position at the age of 71.
In 2008 Helen and DeMar moved to American Fork, UT to be closer to family.
Unlike DeMar, Helen was not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but after lessons from the stake missionaries in Monticello, she was eventually baptized on July 31, 1953.
They were later sealed for time and all eternity, with their children, in the Mesa Arizona Temple on their wedding anniversary in 1959.
Helen served in many church auxiliaries but she spent most of her time serving in the Primary and in Young Women’s.
She and DeMar served six church missions, four of which were stake missions mostly on the Navajo Reservation, and two full time missions in North Carolina.
Helen was a great example of love and service to everyone. She was a faithful and loving wife to her husband DeMar and she especially adored, served, and cherished her children and grandchildren throughout her life.
We will all miss her constant loving support, her personal attention, her wonderful meals, but most of all, her sweet smile and the peace she brought to each of us.
She is preceded in death by her parents, six siblings, one grandchild, and two great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, DeMar B. Perkins, of almost 72 years; children Larry (Muriel) Perkins of Sandy, UT, Dan (Sue) Perkins of Sandy, UT, and Kris (Rick) Ellison of American Fork, UT; 15 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and seven great-great-grandchildren and three on the way.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 15 in American Fork, UT.
Interment graveside services will take place on Wednesday, March 16 at 1 p.m. at the Monticello, UT Cemetery.
