Edwin Brown Belt was born 19 June 1862 in Fayette, Iowa, to parents, Benedict Belt and Secilia Griffis. He was the 7th child of 9 born to this couple: Thomas J. Belt, Hiriam Marion Belt, Benjamin F. Belt, George Washington Belt, Azro Lumis Belt, Robert Jackson Belt, Edwin Brown Belt, Albert G. Belt, and Lilly Belt.
Edwin was married first in 1886 to Missouri Anne "Zora Annie" Holtzclaw. Two children were born to them: Ruby Golden Belt (1887- ), and Claude F. Belt (1889-1961). Missouri Anne died in childbirth and Edwin married 2nd in 1897 to Lavina "Linnie" Viola Denniston. To this marriage 4 more children were born: Cecil Franklin Belt (1898-1966), Freda M. Belt (1900- ), James Albert Belt (1905-1980), and Robert Edwin Belt (1908-1951).
Edwin Brown Belt spent most of his life in Story County, Iowa and died in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on 6 August 1909 at age 47.
