There were two John Noe's born in Harlan County both born around 1840. One was the son of Randolph Noe and Emily Raison. The other was born to Buford Noe and Nancy Forrester. Both of these families were are found in the Harlan County Census in 1850 & 1860, not far from one and other. In 1864, Emily Raison died and Randolph Noe married Mary Polly ? Randolph and his new wife are next found in the 1870 census in Owsley County, Kentucky living next door to the Gross family. (pg 21 family #144) His son, John, is found in the same census in Owsley County (pg 25 family #167). He is married to America Gross and has one child under a year old. I believe John died in 1870 but cannot find proof of that. Either way America, his wife, is remarried to a man named Metcalf by 1880. She and her child, America Noe, are listed in the 1880 census. It shows America Noe 10 step-daughter. This leads me to believe that parents listed on this Memorial are incorrect. FURTHER proof...
John Noe #2 Son of Buford and Nancy Forrester Noe was in the Civil War and fought with Co F 47th KY Inf, a UNION force. The shield on the tombstone represents the soldier was a Union troop. Buford & Nancy are shown in the 1870 Harlan County Census (family 22 pg 3) and John R and Julia Osborne are in the same Harlan County Census (family 23 pg 4) with their first 3 children. Again, in 1880 Harlan County Census, Buford and Nancy Noe are family 184 pg 21. John and Julie are family 219 pg 25 with 7 kids. (they had a total of 12). Last but not least, the Civil War Pension request shows Julie Ann Osborne received a pension for her husband John Noe who died 22 March 1907.
Long story short, I think the parents are Buford and Nancy, NOT Randolph and Emily.
