Karen graduated from Neptune High School in 1975 and became a legal secretary with the law firm of Healy and Weinstein. In 1979, she went to work for Bell Telephone Laboratories in Holmdel as a secretary, where she was promoted to Technical Associate and then to Senior Technical Associate while earning an Associate's degree in Computer Science from Brookdale Community College. Karen never really liked Louise as a middle name, so she changed her name to Karen H. Soltes when she married in 1983. In 1987 she left the Labs to pursue a Business degree from Monmouth College, which she received in 1989. After that, Karen focused on becoming a mother and raising a family. In 2004, she returned to the workplace in the 5th grade office of the Township of Ocean Intermediate School, where she worked until taking a leave of absence in early 2011.

Karen was first diagnosed with breast cancer in the late summer of 1996, which, after aggressive treatment, went into remission for many years. However, the cancer returned in 2008, and she fought it with strength and determination until late 2011, when she became too weak to fight any longer, and she died in her sleep a few months later.

Karen was a kind and thoughtful person; she never sought the spotlight for herself, but she was always the first to pitch in and help behind the scenes, and to take pictures that turned special moments into lasting memories. Karen loved the beach and the sunshine at the Jersey shore.
