(Son of John Gruber who died June 8th 1897 & Catharina (Hajder-Haider-Heider) Gruber who died December 5th 1903 - both from Illmitz, Moson, Hungary)
-------------------------------

In 1888, John (Janos/Joannes) and Maria (Gartner) GRUBER immigrated with their family of 3 children to the United States from their birth town of Alsoillmic (Illmitz) in Hungarian Moson County. (after 1921, and a change of borders, Illmitz is now in what is known as the Seewinkel or Lake Corner, in the north of Burgenland, AUSTRIA) After arriving in the US, they had 5 more children.

Our Grubers came to US about May 1888, settled around New Brighton, Ramsey County, MN. By 1900 they moved to North Dakota; first to Springvale Township in Barnes County south of Oriska, then near Foxholm in Ward County. John & Marie lived for a time (about 1910 to about 1916 ) in Polk County, Oregon, then moved back to Foxholm. They moved briefly to Bottineau County, ND, and shortly after Marie died there in 1927, John moved with several of his family members to St. Walburg (Bolney area), in Saskatchewan, joining his cousin, Rudolph Musch, who had gone to homestead there in 1907.

John died in Canada in 1931, as did his son Odilo in 1934 and his daughter Theresia Gruber Baumgartner in 1944. After Theresia's death, the remaining sons/grandsons that had moved to Canada returned to the United States.
