Joseph Beaty lived with his family in Union County Arkansas in 1850. By 1860 he was with other members of his family in Jordan's Saline Van Zandt Texas working as a salt boiler. He and his brother William enlisted September 25, 1861 in Wood County and served in Company H, 10th Regiment Texas Cavalry. By the next year they were in camp in northeast Texas then Little Rock. Many of the men suffered from measles and were unable to move. Joseph died in St. John's hospital in 1862 as published in the August 12, 1862 edition of the Texas Republican.
