OBITUARY:
A Celebration of Life service for The Rev. John Gordon Peery is to be held at 3:00 .p.m Sunday, March 13, 2016 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1430 N. Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29072.
Gordon was born September 20, 1935, and passed away March 10, 2016. He was born in Guntur (Guntur is a city in the Guntur district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh & is a municipal corporation and the administrative headquarters of Guntur district), South India, where his parents, Rev. John C. and Betty Peery, were lifelong missionaries.
Gordon was a graduate of Kodaikanal High School in 1953, Newberry College, B.S. in science in 1957, and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, MDiv in 1960. He continued his love of learning with Bible studies, travels, stamp collecting, and most recently, colored pencil art classes.
He married Leah Jacobson, his college sweetheart, in 1959. Leah was college roommate and lifelong best friends with Ann Drafts. Gordon was an ordained Lutheran minister and served St. John's in Clinton, SC, Good Shepherd in Sanford, FL, Calvary in Ruskin, FL, St Paul's in Gilbert, SC, and Faith in Newberry, SC. He also served as interim pastor at several South Carolina churches, including Pilgrim Lutheran where he remained an active member. After a long and gradual decline that had Gordon mostly mobile and enjoying life, he went fairly quickly to be with his Lord at Lexington Medical center.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 56 years, daughters, Wanda Peery of Lexington, SC, Laura (Mike) McElmurray of Grovetown, GA, and Mary Beth (Tony) Parker of Apex, NC; grandchildren, Megan (Nathaniel) Hampton of Winter Park, FL, Lisa McElmurray of Johnson City, TN, Tyler and Ryan Parker of Apex, NC; his sister, Virginia (Ozzie) Herlong of Chapin SC; aunts, nephews, cousins, and many beloved friends.
Memorials may be made to the Pilgrim Lutheran Church Building Fund.
