John apparently was the youngest child of William and Lively (Harber) Stephenson. He was born before birth certificates were required, but his tombstone lists his birthdate, which is consistent with a listing of him in the 1860 Dunklin County Census as a 9-month old. It's unclear what happened to his father, who is not listed in that household. By 1870, the family had returned to Tennessee, though John doesn't appear in that listing, possibly an oversight. He's in the 1880 Census with the family in Crockett County and his place of birth is listed as Missouri. On May 12, 1889 in Crockett County, Tenn., he married Laura Alice "Dollie" Taylor. They had four children, William, Ethel, I.A. and Katie. By the 1900 Census, he and his family owned a farm in Crockett County. He could read but not write. John died of pneumonia after getting the measles and is buried in Pond Creek Cemetery in Maury City. The tombstone reads "Stevenson."
