Patricia Rose "Pat" Lindsay, 87, of Waco, passed away peacefully February 20, 2016, at Providence Hospice Place in Waco. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, February 23, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home. A private family graveside service will be held Wednesday, February 24, at China Spring Cemetery.
Pat was born in London, England, to the late George and Nora Osborne. She was part of a close-knit family, but when World War II began the family was separated as most of the men in the family served in the military and the women and children were left behind in London. Pat spent many nights in bomb shelters with her mother and younger brother. They were eventually evacuated to Wales to live and attend school for several months.
When Pat was 17 years old she attended a dance at Covent Gardens in London and met a young Army Air Corps navigator, Jim Lindsay, from Mt. Carmel, Illinois. The story has it that Jim and Pat each saw one empty chair and ran for it with Pat landing on Jim’s lap. The day the war ended Pat joined thousands of other Londoners in front of Buckingham Palace. She and her cousin, Dolly, stood on a statue of Queen Victoria and celebrated.
Jim and Pat married in England soon after and were together for 62 years. They lived in Illinois, Indiana, and finally moved to Texas in 1965 so that Jim could pursue his career with Paul Meyer and SMI. She met other English wives in Waco and formed friendships that have lasted for decades.
As much as she loved England she was proud of the fact that she became an American citizen a few years after arriving here. After retirement Jim and Pat travelled throughout the United States for about 10 years in their motor home. Pat made friends everywhere they went with her quick wit and her genuine interest in other people. They especially enjoyed beach combing along Padre Island National Seashore and flying elaborate kites on the beach at Depoe Bay, Oregon, that Jim designed and that Pat handmade. She loved all travel and was able to share England with her family on several trips as well as other destinations in Europe.
Pat succeeded at everything she did. She was an exceptional seamstress, and her home was always decorated beautifully. She loved gardening and knitting, and even a career selling real estate; however, she always had time for her family and was devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Pat was a wonderful listener and confidante.
Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in 2007; son, Jeffrey Rex Lindsay; and a grandson, Brian Keith Berry.
Survivors include her daughter, Janice Fadal and husband, Dr. Robert Fadal, of Waco; brother, Ray Osborne, of Portsmouth, United Kingdom; grandson, Brady L. Berry and wife, Andrea, of Austin; great-granddaughters, Madison Berry and Natalie Berry, of Whitney; and Bryn Berry, of Austin.
