Greencastle History

It was not until after the Civil War that there was substantial improvement. In 1865 two Greencastle citizens (atoning for the Putnam County action a dozen years earlier that had given the school system such a setback) procured passage by the legislature of a bill authorizing the issuance of bonds for the constructions of schools. In 1867 for the first time a superintendent of schools was appointed, Gillum Ridpath, who had just graduated from Asbury (he was later the editor of the historical section of the very valuable Atlas of Putnam County published in 1879, and a brother of the famous Asbury professor and author James Clark Ridpath and of Greencastle's beloved teacher Martha Ridpath). His salary was $4.00 per day.
Much of the material has been gathered from the files of Greencastle newspapers, the minutes of the city council, the school board, and DePauw’s board of trustees, although none of these sources has been exhausted. Use has been made of the ATLAS OF PUTNAM COUNTY (Chicago, 1879) with its historical material by Gillum Ridpath, the BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL RECORD OF PUTNAM COUNTY (Chicago, 1887), and Jesse Weik’s HISTORY OF PUTNAM COUNTY (Indianapolis, 1910).
