Edward Weatherill was born on 19 March, 1887, and educated at St. Andrew’s College. He obtained at the age of 20 his B.Sc. degree in Naval Architecture and Engineering from Armstrong College, Durham University, and after serving his time as a Marine Engineer, sailing all over the world, gained his First Class Certificate, and subsequently became a Partner in his father’s firm of Ship owners. He lived at 6 Ailesbury Road and later 27 Sydney Parade Avenue with his widowed mother. Weatherill was mostly on the second XV in Lansdowne and won his colours in 1913 for the seconds but he had also played for the firsts. He was on the committee of the club. He joined the Pals in September 1914, and on becoming an officer in March 1915 moved to a different company. He left for the Dardanelles 9th July, 1915
