In the 1901 Census, widower commercial travellor (?) W.W. Clerke, 49, born February 21, 1852, in N.B.was living in St. Stephen, N.B. with daughter May, 18, born June 9, 1882; and son Dean, 13, born February 9, 1888; mother widow Harriet, 85, born March 31, 1816; and sister widow Ada Melvin, 58, born April 11, 1842; and domestic servant Mary Bolter, 20, all born in N.B.

A jolly party of St. Stephen gentlemen went down river in the steam yacht "Annie" for an outing Monday last. The party was made up of C.H. CLERKE, Henry GRAHAM, Capt. H.B. MacALLISTER, James G. STEVENS, jr., C.A. LINDOW, Jno. McGIBBON, George J. CLARKE, S. PORTE and Capt. D.A. MELVIN. After spending a few hours at St. Andrews, the party started upon their return trip between 8 and 9 o'clock. About midnight, St. Stephen was reached and the party had got out on the street when someone missed Capt. Melvin. When enquired as to his whereabouts, no one had seen him leave the boat. Mr. Clerke, his brother-in-law, remembered having some conversation with him after the steamer had passed the Ledge, but did not see him again. As he has not been feeling very well it is supposed he stepped out of the cockpit of the boat and as there was no guard on her he fell into the water. No outcry was heard by any of the men on the steamer. Capt. Melvin was a retired ship master. He belonged to St. John, but for several years past, has resided with his wife (nee CLERKE) in St. Stephen. He has no family. He was a good natured, compassionate man. As soon as he was missed, searching parties were despatched and at 1:0 p.m. Tuesday, the searchers found the body on the rocks almost in front of the residence of Mrs. Chipman.
