Driver Freed in Fatal Crash

Mrs. Harry G. Ebbs, 69, Succumbs to Injuries Received June 21.
A coroner's jury investigating the accident which cost the life of Mrs. H. G. Ebbs, 69, of Matternville, that no blame was attached to the driver of the car which struck the Ebbs machine at the intersection of Route 322 and the Buffalo Run Valley road on Sunday, June 21. Mrs. Ebbs died last Wednesday night at the Centre County Hospital, Bellefonte. She suffered head injuries, fractures of several ribs and fracture of the pelvic bone. Testimony at the inquest conducted by Centre County Coroner Charles Sheckler, Friday night at the Waddle school house, revealed that Mr. and Mrs. Ebbs en route to Sunday school on the morning of the accident, drove slowly along the Buffalo Run Valley road and upon reaching the intersection with Route 322 the Ebbs car began to cross without halting at the stop sign.
A car driven by Charles E. Robertson, 28, of Houtzdale, traveling south on Route 322, struck the front end of the Ebbs car, and then ran off the road and came to rest on its side. The Ebbs car remained on its wheels on the highway. Mr. Ebbs, aged about 80, admitted that he had failed to stop at the stop sign, but said that he looked both ways before crossing and saw no traffic on the road. Marjorie Walk, of Matternville, who was at a filling station nearby the scene of the accident, related that she heard the crash and helped get Mrs. Ebbs out of the car. Charles E. Robertson, driver of the other car, and his two brothers, Robert Robertson, of Buffalo, N.Y., and Jack Robertson, of Houtzdale, all testified that their car was traveling at between 40 and 50 miles an hour, that they saw the Ebbs car slowly approach the intersection, and believed that it was going to stop. When it continued through the stop sign, they said the driver of the Robertson car sounded his horn, applied the brakes and veered to the right of the road in an attempt to avert a crash.
The only other witness called was Pvt. Robert Crozier, of the Pleasant Gap sub-station State Motor Police, who gave a report on his investigation of the mishap. Mrs. Ebbs, a former teacher in Centre County Schools, was a daughter of Joseph H. and Kesiah Calderwood Heberling and was born March 27, 1873. She was married on April 28, 1905, to Harry G. Ebbs. Surviving children are Joseph G., of Port Matilda; George H., of Coraopolis; Mrs. Helen Myers, of Port Matilda, R.D.; and Mrs. Mabel Miller, of Kansas City, Missouri. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Maude Bechdel, of Blanchard, and Mrs. E.W. Mayes, of Spruce Creek, and five grandchildren. Mrs. Ebbs was a member of the Grays Methodist Church and was a teacher in the church Sunday school. Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at the home, with Rev. Robert Breth officiating. Interment was made in the Ross Cemetery.
