She married her husband in 1960 and accompanied him during his military service. Thereafter, they relocated to Southern California to raise their family. Later, they relocated to the New York metropolitan area for four years. Then, they returned once again to Southern California, settling into their Palos Verdes Estates home. Phyllis also enjoyed a 14-year bicoastal residency in Palos Verdes Estates and New York City.
Phyllis received a bachelor of science degree and subsequently received her certification as a registered dietitian from the University of Washington. Before having children she worked as a dietitian for the Veterans Administration. Following her children's graduations, she joined Xplor International as an event planner. Most recently, she worked at a Palos Verdes preschool with children who had both physical and learning disabilities. She was loved by the children she assisted, as well as their families and teachers.
Phyllis was an exceptionally loving and kind-hearted friend, mother and grandmother. She greeted each day with a smile and always sought to see the good in anything and anyone that came her way. She was extremely well-liked; she made friends everywhere and with everyone. Those who knew her will remember her unending support, compassion and the warmth of her presence. Her family will treasure the memories of special times spent in her company and, in particular, her annual Christmas Eve celebrations. Those celebrations brought together everything Phyllis loved about her life - the holiday season, good food and music, generosity and her family. Above all, her family meant everything to her, and her presence in their lives was the greatest blessing to them.
Phyllis faced her cancer diagnosis with the utmost bravery and positivity. She remained active throughout her final months, attending her grandson's wedding and visiting her family in Washington state. Her strength, perseverance and optimism, until the end, continue to be an inspiration to us all.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Florence Druffel; three sisters, Laverne Christenson, Lois Moser and Margaret Scharnhorst; and brother Harry Druffel.
She is survived by her brother, Phil Druffel.
