Julius Rolshoven was born to Frederick Rolshoven and Maria Therese Hellings in Detroit.

At 18 he went to New York City to study at the Cooper Union Art School, then the Düsseldorf Academy, then continued on to Munich, studying under the Kentucky-born artist Frank Duveneck in his Venice and Florence schools, becoming one of the "Duveneck Boys".

He married Anna Eliza Chickering in Florence, Italy on Mar. 10, 1887. Anna was the daughter of George and Eliza Chickering of the famous Chickering Piano Company in Boston. Sadly Anna died of pneumonia on Dec. 5, 1896 in London. They had no children together.

After some years in Paris and London, Rolshoven decided to settle in Florence in 1902.

Julius returned to the US at the beginning of World War I. In Dec. 1915 he married his second wife Harriett Haynes Blazo in Los Angeles. From 1920 until his death he moved back and forth among his three residences in Florence, Detroit and Santa Fe.

When returning from a visit to his home in Florence, and arriving in Manhattan in Oct. 1930, Julius fell seriously ill. He died at St. Lukes Hospital on Dec. 7, 1930 at the age of 71. His 92 year old mother died 4 hours later that day in Detroit.

In Sep. 1957, Harriett Rolshoven, widow of the artist, donated to the University of New Mexico, $100,000; she also donated twenty works made by her husband, estimated at the time to be worth between $50,000 and $75,000. Harriet died in Santa Fe, in 1964.
