Died on Saturday, January 2, at his residence at Lake Sherwood Village Retirement Community at the age of 91.

He is survived by a daughter, Melinda Bates Petersen, and husband, Glen, of Baton Rouge; 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren: Brandon and Laura Bates (Rickey, Rebecca) of Atlanta, GA; Kyle and Michelle Petersen (Hadley, Connor, Presley) of Prairieville, LA; Justin and Amy Bates of Dunwoody, GA; Drew and Amanda Petersen (Jack, Amelia) of Marietta, GA; and Kirsten Petersen Subjeck and husband, Sean, of Farmer's Branch, TX; along with former daughter-in-law, Joyce Jackson Bates Starns, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Geraldine "Jerry" Pourcy Bates; a son, Richard Louis Bates; a daughter, Jerry Lynn Bates; parents, Richard E., Sr., and Caroline Brabham Bates; 3 brothers: Dr. Carl Bates; Richard E. Bates, Jr.; D.C. "Bill" Bates and a sister, Mildred Bates Day. Also preceded by special aunt and uncle caregivers, Almac and Rhoda Bates, along with their children who were considered a sister, Ruby Dell Bates Hodge, and a brother, Jimmy Bates.

Hilton was born in Liberty, MS on May 29, 1924. He graduated from Liberty High School and joined the U.S. Army, serving as Staff Sargent during World War II, stationed in Okinawa.

After graduating from LSU, he made Baton Rouge his home for the past 68 years. An accountant by profession, he retired from Ethyl Corporation and later from Georgia Gulf Corporation. He was a member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church. Always an avid gardener, he will always be remembered for his beautifully landscaped yards containing lush roses, his delicious home preserved figs and lime pickles. The grandchildren and neighbors will never forget his homemade chocolate fudge and lemon pies, made from home-grown lemons. Hilton's greatest legacy, according to him, was the completion at age 88 of Volume 3, of "The Bates Family of Amite County, Mississippi." This was gifted to some 75 relatives.

Visitation will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home, Saturday, January 9th, 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon with burial service conducted by Rev. Fred Wideman at noon. Entombment will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. Hilton's son-in-law and his grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
