Robert Anderson III was born on March 26, 1824 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. His parents were Robert Anderson II (a master baker) and Margaret Russell. Robert's first wife was Lucy Helen Peterson (youngest daughter of Captain Daniel & Sarah Peterson). They were married on March 5, 1851 in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine. Rev. Jacob R. Scott was the officiant. They had two children named Hewett Taylor and William McGowan. Robert operated a grocery store with his Uncle, Thomas Taylor, in Boston. On June 19, 1857 Lucy died at 113 Cole Street in Jersey City, NJ (she was 27 years old). Then Robert married his 2nd wife, Sarah Elizabeth Martin (daughter of Charles Martin & Susan Shope). Their wedding took place on November 11, 1857 in New York. They lived in Brooklyn and had four children named Malcolm Charles, Jennie Russell (Mrs. Baumann and Mrs.Harvey Edward Simpson), Robert Lincoln, & Agnes Baird (Mrs. Joshua Ellis Rohrer). Robert (Senior) was an accountant, clerk, and teller in that city. He was also a licensed Episcopal preacher for Brooklyn's Marine Barracks Chapel on Flushing Avenue & The Asylum For The Insane at Flatbush. The Episcopal Bishop of Long Island, Abraham Newkirk Littlejohn, gave the license. On March 27, 1885 Robert died and was buried at the Jersey City Cemetery.


Note: Robert's youngest brother, John, was buried at the the Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. Their step-mother, Marion Miller was buried with her daughter's family at the Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, IL. His maternal grandfather, William Russel, was buried at the Old Kilsyth Cemetery in Stirlingshire, Scotland.
