Nello Allen Lansdowne, 80, of Guntersville, Ala.; formerly of Kenosha passed away on Dec. 9, after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Madison, Wis., on April 15, 1935, he was the son of John and Bessie (Guffey) Lansdowne.

In March of 1976, he married Judith A. (Smith) Lansdowne. He enlisted in the United States Navy as a Seaman Recruit in 1953 and earned his Dolphins in July of 1955. Al served aboard the USS Howard Gilmore AS 16, and Submarines USS Hardhead SS 365, USS Sea Lion APSS 315, USS Ethan Allen SSBN 608 Blue (Commissioning plus 2 Patrols), USS Abraham Lincoln SSBN 6602 Blue (2 Patrols), USS Patrick Henry SSBN 599 Gold (2 Patrols), USS Patrick Henry 599 Blue (Overhaul, Groton CT), USS Tinosa SSN 606, USS Cavalla SSK 244 (2 patrols) and the Aircraft Carrier USS John F. Kennedy CVA/CV67. Al served aboard the USS Ethan Allen as the sound and vibration analyst during Operation Dominic, the only US test of an operational ballistic missile with a live warhead on May 6th, 1962. After retiring from the Navy in 1973, he went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree in Broadcasting and Communications from U. W. Parkside in 1976. He taught at Gateway and several other Colleges as he and his wife continued to move south. Al's best times were spent on his yearly vacations taking his grandchildren and family to caves and State Parks. His greatest passion was doing restoration work and leading tours onboard the USS Cavalla SSK244, berthed at the American Undersea Warfare Center in Galveston TX.

Al is survived by his wife ,Judie of Guntersville; his daughter, Fay Lang (Mike) of Kenosha and his grandchildren, Kelly and Joe Lang. He is further survived by his sister-in-law, Audrey Lansdowne; brother and sister in law, Joe and Judy Smith, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings Wayne, Horace, Theckla and Blossom; his mother and father in law Joseph and Verna (Kuczenski) Smith and his son Allen.

A Memorial Service was held in Guntersville. Donations in remembrance of Al can be made to the Cavalla Historical Foundation, 601 Tremont St. Galveston, TX 77550 (website - American Undersea Warfare Center). A Memorial Service will be held in Kenosha at a future date.
