Gertrude "Getty" Carroll was the daughter of John Carroll and Mariah Van Alstine, who left the Mohawk Valley of New York State and immigrated to the Thames River Valley of Upper Canada (now Ontario) arriving in February 1800. It seems probable that Getty was born along the way. She was their youngest child.

Getty married Thomas Ingersoll, Jr., son of Major Thomas Ingersoll, who founded the settlement that would become Ingersoll, Oxford County, Ontario. Getty's brother William married Thomas' sister Appy. In 1840/1841, Thomas Jr. was the first to establish residence at the falls of the Thames in what is now St. Mary's, where he build a saw mill and a grist mill. Other members of the Ingersoll family followed.

Getty and Thomas were the parents of four children, Charles, Maria, Thomas III, and Justus.

She and Thomas are buried in St. Mary's Protestant Cemetery. Footstone "Gertrude Carroll, wife of Thomas Ingersoll 1800 - 1886"
