Hugh was the eighth son and twelfth child born to Edward O'Donnell and Agnes Mulholland Wotherspoon. He married Marion and they emigrated to California in the early 1960's where they had two children.
His brothers nicknamed him "Pogo" after the comic strip character, and the O'Donnell family of Hamilton, Ontario affectionately called him that until his death.
