Edna D. Sahlsten Johnson, age 96, former Stonington and Gladstone resident, died Friday morning, September 1st, 2006, at the Luce County Annex in Newberry where she was currently a patient.

Edna was born June 12th, 1910 in Stonington, the daughter of Thomas Martin and Mamie Maria (Gunderson) Christianson and was raised in Stonington and attended the Bungalow and Papineau Schools.

At age 17, she relocated to Detroit where she was employed in several occupations during the "Great Depression". While residing in the Detroit area, she met Arnold Sahlsten and they married on July 3rd, 1934. Together they raised three daughters in a home that Arnold built himself for his family. Arnold preceded her in death on July 3r d, 1970.

Edna moved back to Stonington a few years after Arnold Sahlston death, where she rekindled a friendship with an old schoolmate, Aaron Johnson, and they later married. She remained in Stonington until a short time after Aaron's death in 1993, when she moved to Gladstone to reside with her daughter, Ruth Smith for 6.5 years. In 1999, Edna went to live with her other daughter, Marge Canfield, in the Newberry area for 8 months before she became a resident at the Luce County Annex.
Edna was a longtime member of the Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church in Detroit for many years.

Flower gardening and quilting were some of her favorite past-times and in earlier years, she and her husband, Arnold loved to dance, mostly to Swedish songs. In addition, she enjoyed shopping and she strolled many department stores in her time and she developed an appreciation of fine china, crystal, silver, and linens.

Her family fondly remembers her keen sense of humor and her love of family. They considered Edna a joy to be around.

3 Daughters-Margaret (Donald) Canfield of McMillan, MI; Ruth Smith of Gladstone; Dorothy Arlene (Kurt) Vittetoe of Oak Grove, MO

1 Sister- Agnes Sanpaka of Stonington

11 Grandchildren- Michael (Connie) Canfield, Mark (Debbie) Canfield, Jeff (Kim) Canfield, Chris (Sarah Webb) Canfield, Steve (Kathy) McLennan, Christine (Paul) Smith, John (Shannon) McLennan, Dion (Patty Swanson) Kuczewski, Dawn Kuczewski, Tracy Smith, and Carl (Stacy) Smith.

21 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren., and nieces and nephews.

From her second marriage, she leaves to survive the children of Aaron Johnson, Aaron Johnson Jr. and Wayne Johnson.

In addition to her husbands, Edna was preceded in death by 3 brothers; Orvin, Clifford, and Marvin Christianson, and by 2 sisters; Ruth Christianson and Muriel Sanpaka.

The family of Edna Sahlsten Johnson will receive friends on Wednesday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Services celebrating her life will follow on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home with Rev. Jonathan Schmidt of the First Lutheran Church of Gladstone officiating. Luncheon will follow services at the First Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will be in the Rapid River Cemetery on Wednesday after luncheon. The Skradski-Boyce Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the family.
