MOTHER LOSES IN HEROIC FIGHT FOR HER CHILD'S LIFE
Robert Hugh Applegate, 6-month-old son of Mrs. Edith Applegate, of 1723 East Carpenter street, died at 12:45 p.m. April 13, 1939 at St. John's hospital suffering from a streptococcus infection despite an heroic effort of his mother to save his life.

Death of the infant climaxed a persistent battle by his mother and physicians to check inroads of the dreaded bacillus and a previous illness of lobar pneumonia.

Mrs. Applegate, 26, a graduate nurse who received her training at Homestead hospital, Pittsburgh, Pa., gave three transfusions of her own blood to aid the child.

Miss Bess Boodner, secretary of John A. Weiland, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, learned of the infant's plight and submitted to a blood transfusion early April 13.

The child, born prematurely, contracted lobar pneumonia shortly after birth. Streptococcus infection followed when his condition weakened.

Remains will be removed at 3 p.m. from the Bisch Memorial home to the residence, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. April 15.

Burial will be in Roselawn cemetery.
