Mr. Nutting was well-educated. Graduated Western Reserve College in Cleveland, Ohio.
In 1847, he received his license to preach the Gospel by the Presbytery of Portage.
1849-1852, he was a pastor in Ravenna, Portage County, Ohio at a Congregational Church.
In 1853, he taught Latin and Greek at Illinois College in Jacksonville, IL.
He retired this position in 1863 and moved to Indianpolis, IN, where he was engaged in business and preached occasionally.
In 1876, he returned to Illinois. Taking a position at Blackburn College in Carlinville as the Chair of Latin and Greek Languages. Resigned in 1891. Mr. Nutting then accepted a pastoral position at the Presbyterian Church in Randolph, IL. When his health began to fail, he and his wife retired to Iowa City, Iowa, where their son Charles, was a state university facility member. About 1896, they returned to their homestead on College Avenue.
Survived by his wife and six children: Mrs. George J. Dodd of Greenwood, Missouri; Miss Carrie Nutting of Carlinville, Illinois; William Nutting of Leadville, Colorado; Professor Charles C. Nutting of Iowa City, Iowa; Mrs. Rev. C. A. Highfield of Waterman, Illinois; and Mrs. Rev. J. M. Ross of Kirkwood, Illinois.
His body was brought by train to Jacksonville, IL. , Funeral was to be held from the train with burial in Diamond Grove.
