Jim's twin brother died at one week old. Jim's mother, Abbie, died of breast cancer when he was only 18 months old. He went to live with his paternal aunt Catherine (Kelleher) Donegan in Wakefield, MA. He was close with Catherine's daughter, Catherine "Dolly" Donegan and her sister Margaret, aka Sister Cosmas. After 1930 he reunited with his brothers and father who remarried to Ethel Kuykendal. He served in the US Army during WWII. Jim and his brother Bill graduated from USC and went into the escrow trade in Los Angeles, living the confirmed bachelors' life in Long Beach.
