After his mother died in 1928, he and brother Joe were sent to Boy's Town orphanage in Nebraska. In 1930 he reunited with his brothers and father who remarried to Ethel Kuykendal. He served in the US Navy during WWII. Bill and brother Jim graduated from USC and went into the escrow trade in Los Angeles, living the confirmed bachelors' life in Long Beach.
