    Grandma Chaffee, as everyone knew her, had reached the age of 94 years, 4 months, 4 days at the time of her death which occurred Aug 19, 1940. She was born in Sylvania, Ohio April 15, 1846. Her maiden name was Harriet Hopkins. At the age of 19 she was married to C. W. Chaffee.
    Shortly after their marriage they came to Kansas, settling on a farm in Irving township, Brown county. The country was quite sparsely settled at that time. There were only 6 houses in Hiawatha, no railroad. Mrs. Chaffee's mind was clear, her memory good to the very last, so that her friends greatly enjoyed hearing her tell of life in Kansas 70 years ago.
    After 25 years in Irving township they moved to a farm near Hamlin, later coming to Hiawatha. After the death of her husband in 1918, she made her home among her children for several years, then moved to her own house where she lived with her daughter, husband, Mr. Mrs. W. V. Pierson. After the death of Mrs. Pierson she made her home with her daughter Della, husband, J. L. Sherrer, near Hamlin. For the past 7 months she has been with her son, Wallace of Horton, returning to Mr. Sherrer's home a week before her death.
    Grandma Chaffee greatly enjoyed life, altho handicapped by the results of a fall sustained several years ago. She was a devout Christian woman, having years ago united with the Church of God near Highland. She possessed a kindly disposition, was always ready to help in time of sickness or other distress. She will be greatly missed by her relatives, friends.
    She was the mother of 9 children 5 of whom are deceased, Mrs. Minnie Pierson, O. D. Chaffee, Mrs. Nellie E. Weltmer, Ottie, Daisy Chaffee, the 2 latter dying in infancy. Surviving are Mrs. Anna Pfeiffer, Hamlin; Herbert Chaffee, Hiawatha; Della M. Sherrer, Hamlin; Wallace Chaffee, Horton. Also surviving are 26 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, 7 great, great grandchildren.
    Funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. [next sentence in photocopy illegible] Burial was in the Hamlin cemetery.

   The death certificate for Harriett Chaffee lists her father as John Hopkins, his birthplace "Unknown", and the maiden name & birthplace of her mother as "Unknown".
   Harriett's daughter, Mrs. Della M. Sherrer, provided information for the certificate.
