In Hawaii's 1890 census, Kahanuulanio'keahi's occupation is listed as "Hawaiian fan & hat maker". But her most unique occupation has been as a "lady-in-waiting" to Queen Lili'uokalani, the last Queen of the Hawaiian Nation. They had developed a close friendship.
Kahanuulani had developed diabetes late in life, and had gone blind as a result. During Queen Liliu'okalani's imprisonment in the Iolani Palace, the Queen had written letters to Kahanuulani and affectionately addressed her as "Dear Blind One".
She was called "Kuku" by her grandchildren.
Kahanuulani was wife to Eli Meek, son of Captain John Meek.
