John Wesley Hufford was born in Woodford Co., Kentucky. He is found in records as "J.W.," and for reasons unknown he was called "Bob." As a child, he moved to Scott County, Indiana, with his parents and siblings.

NOTE: His gravestone says he was born in 1830. More likely, he was born in 1825. He first married in February 1847. On the 1860 census, he reported as 33; on the 1870 census, as 46; on the 1880 census, as 54. Because the gravestone says 1830, this memorial page will list 1830; however, almost certainly that year is not correct.

John Wesley's were George, Martha, Hezekiah, James Lloyd, Solomon, Elizabeth, and Nancy Jane.

In Indiana, in February 1847, John Wesley married Nancy Jane MERANDA. He moved with his family to Iowa before his wife Nancy birthed his first child, Sarah, in December 1848. Nancy died soon after childbirth.

From Iowa, he moved to Clark Co., Missouri, where he married again on December 4, 1853, to Margaret Ann GEORGE.

Soon after 1854, he and his new wife moved to Shasta Co., California, where John Wesley mined for gold. Ultimately, he became a farmer and livestock rancher.

With Margaret, he had nine children: Solomon Joseph, John Wesley "Pete," John George, Ella, Jefferson, Robert Edmond (or Robert Edward), Louis Lee, Howard Henderson, and Anna Laura.

John Wesley died when he was 65. His widow survived him by 22 years.
