Rowland enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 31 December 1941, and was assigned to the 450th Bomb Squadron, 332nd Bomb Group, 9th Air Force as a B-26 pilot. His aircraft (no. 41-31849 -- "Single Engine Operator") Failed to Return (FTR) from a bombing mission to Zudausques, France. It was hit by flak in its port engine and wing while over the target. The aircraft fell out of formation, going into a tight spin, ending with an explosion on impact. (MACR 2845.)
