KARKAU, William Fredrick
July 26,1938, was a wonderful day. It was the day this amazing man was born to Eva Marie Longacher and Emil August Karkau in Lansing, Mich., the 7th of their 11 children. Bill remained in Lansing until he joined the Navy and headed off to see the world. Sea duty aboard The Bon Hahm Richard, took him to many new and exciting places. It also gave him the "travel bug". He met his life partner in 1963, and immediately left on the 1st of their hundreds of adventures together. He was preparing for their cruise around the world when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February. He lost his battle with this horrid disease on August 2, 2006. Bill's profession was Accounting but he was one of those rare persons that was good at everything. He was a Mr. Fix It, computer whiz, trusted confidant, non judgmental friend, a man that everyone admired and a loving,
devoted mate. Bills passing will leave a void in countless lives. Surviving is his life partner of 43 years Dale Deschler, longtime special friend Michael Lawson, both of Lancaster, Calif., treasured niece Terri Karkau of La Center, Wash., sisters Ferne Preston (Carl) of East Lansing, Janice Thompson (Lawrence) of Traverse City, Mich., brothers Thomas (Martha) Ostego., Robert (Mary Lou) of Lansing and Herb (Liz) Karkau of Lansing, numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his sister Doris Sharp and brothers Lawrence, Rudy, Joe and Brian Karkau. Visitation was held from 2 to 4 p.m., and 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, August 11, 2006, at Estes- Leadley downtown Lansing Funeral Home. Services were held at 12 p.m., Saturday, August 12, 2006, at Estes-Leadley Chapel. In California, a visitation will be held on August 18, 2006, before Interment, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cathedral City. Interment services will follow, at 11:30 a.m., Friday, August 18, 2006, at Desert Memorial Park, Cathedral City, Calif. Remembrances: American Cancer Society or Hoffmann Hospice, 1543 East Palmdale Blvd., Suite N, Palmdale, CA. 93550. Arrangements by Halley-Olsen-Murphy Memorial Chapel, Lancaster, Calif.
