He was born Nov. 14, 1939, in Buncombe County. He retired from the North Carolina Division Of Motor Vehicles after 23 years of service. He was a veteran of the Army National Guard and a member of Biltmore Masonic Lodge. He was the son of the late Lee Sam and Gladys Edwards Whitaker. Also preceding him in death was his brother, Richard Harold Whitaker.
Surviving is his wife of 21 years, Lucinda Peters Whitaker; three children, Neal Lee Whitaker and his wife, Kim, of Fletcher, Michael Whitaker and his wife, Cheryl, of Fairview, and Megan LeShea Whitaker of Hendersonville; four stepchildren, Tony, Vickie, Brett and Jeff Skipper; a sister, Nell W. Jenkins and husband, Wayne, of Asheville; a sister in-law, Gail Moore Whitaker of Asheville, a granddaughter, Torri Leigh Whitaker; and three step-grandchildren, Heather Johnson and Heather and Holli Payne; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of West Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Crabb officiating. Burial will be in Whitaker Cemetery, Barnardsville.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the third-floor Oncology Unit at Pardee Hospital, Hendersonville Hematology and Oncology, Dr. Radford and staff, and Sandee Barnwell and Teri Norris.
