Sgt. Irvine was an orderly, wagoneer in the Revolutionary. He was married to Mary "Polly" Pigman who was born on February 14, 1775 in Washington, Pennsylvania and died in 1835. He was the son of Edward Irvine and Mary Curry. Together they had the following children: James D; Samuel; Jane; Jesse; William W; Martha A; Lucinda and Nancy.

He served in the Halifx Company for three months as a sergeant in Captain Peter Roger's Company under Col. Mason's Virginia Regiment.

He was discharged on August 12, this service was a substitute for his brother Samuel. He enlisted May 1780 and served three months as a wagoner in Capt Paul Waddleston's Company under Col. Richardson's Virginia Regiment.

In 1781 he served as orderly Sergeant in Capt. James Hill's Company and then transferred to Capt. Watkin'S Company under Col. Joseph Crockett's Virginia Regiment in which he was an ensign.

He was at the surrender of Corwallis, and marched with British prisoners to Noland's Ferry on the Potomac River where he was discharged. In 1782 he served as wagoner under Major McCray.
