James Millar Family
James Carlton West Millar was the eldest of four sons born to Dr. Lucian and Ada (West) Millar of Canton, NY. Two of the sons followed their father's choice of professions and became doctors, one chose to become an interior decorator and James, abiding by his parent's wishes studied for the ministry.
This was not his own choice and upon reaching the age of 21 years he decided to teach school.
He migrated to North Dakota in the 1880's where he taught school for several years before buying a small sawmill at Nine Mile, MT.
On November 2, 1896 James married Effie Belle Smith, the daughter of Dillon and Jane Ann Smith.
In 1902 James sold the sawmill, invested in cattle, and trailed these cattle with the help of a friend Hugh Stewart, to an area about 30 miles south of Malta where the two friends homesteaded.
The James Millar house was built near the banks of a small tributary to Beaver Creek. This creek still bears the name on Phillips County maps of "Millar Creek", although it is often misspelled as "Miller".
At the time the Millar family, consisting of James, Effie and two daughters, Ada and Helen, moved to their new home, there was no other house or home located between Malta and the Millar home. Trips to Malta were a rare occasion and means of transportation were horses and a lumber wagon or a horse-drawn sled in winter.
In Dec 1902 the youngest daughter, Helen, died of diphtheria.
Two other children were born to James and Effie Millar, namedly Ruth (Clark) Abbey and Hugh S Millar.
James Millar died in April 1932.
