Gertrude Mikel was born April 6, 1902 in Hubbard County, Minnesota to John and Francine (Billmeyer) Mikel. On November 21, 1921 Gertrude was united in marriage to John O. Hartmann in Buckman. After farming in Buckman for a while, the Hartmanns then moved to Minneapolis. They returned to country living when they moved to a farm in Barnes County, North Dakota. A lakeshore farm near Lake Jesse in Alexandria was what brought them back to Minnesota. After one more move to a home in Parkers Prairie, the Hartmanns retired in 1971 into a home in Osakis. Gertrude was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Osakis.
Gertrude loved the benefits of country living. She always raised a large vegetable and flower garden and did a lot of canning every fall. She raised chickens on the farm. When she had some free time Gertrude loved to get out on the lake for some fishing. She spent many summer hours out tending her flowers and in the winter enjoyed playing cards, especially whist. She will also be remembered for her love for cats and the many that graced the farms where she lived.
She is survived by her son, Donald and Charmaine Hartmann of Osakis; daughters: Virginia and Dick Johnson of Elko, NV; Shirley and Roger Schahn of Browerville; 15 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death is her husband, John in 1987, a son Jerome Hartmann; four brothers; and four sisters.
A Mass of Resurrection was held April 5, 2000 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis with Father Victor Kinzer officiating. Interment was at the Calvary Cemetery in Osakis. Honorary pallbearers were Maureen Weitzel, Renee Falk, Gwen Gregory, Michelle Robbins, Sandy Gjestad, Maria May, Heidi Schahn, Bud Porter and Robert Hartmann. Active pallbearers were her grandsons, Jerome, Brian, George, Gerald and Paul Hartmann and Allan Schahn.
