LOCKER, SAMUEL S.

Samuel S. Locker, one of the founders of Bosque County, was of Irish descent. He was
born in North Carolina 1789. His wife, Frances Hereford, was born in Kentucky
1800. They were married in 1818 near Memphis, Tennessee.

To this union were born nine children:
Samuel E., Elizabeth, Andrew, Thomas R., John Plowman, Sallie Ann, James Monroe,
William Carroll and Mary Jane. They moved to Mississippi, then to Texas in 1851, living
in Bell County for about a year.

In 1852 they settled in Bosque County near where the town of Clifton was later located.
Samuel Locker and one of his sons, John P. Locker, helped with the organization of
Bosque County. Their names are included on a monument at Pool Park, out of Clifton, that
recognizes the founders of Bosque County. It is known that two of his sons, John P. and
James Monroe served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

James Monroe Locker, born in 1833, gave the land for the first school in Clifton. He
owned a cotton gin there. Samuel S. Locker gave the land for the first county seat of
Bosque County.

James Monroe Locker married Nancy Slaven in 1856. Their children were Susan C.
(Sudie), born 1857 and Andrew Jackson. The mother and infant son died soon after his
birth in 1860.

James Monroe Locker then married Cemantha Susanna Bible, niece of his first wife,
1861. She was born 1844. To this union were born fourteen children: William Carroll,
Melinda, John Lewis, Elizabeth Alice, Joseph S., Thomas Hall, James Parshall, Francis,
Samuel Browning, Stephen Monroe, twins Harry Loy and Archie Kell, twins Ada Sue
and Ida Sue. James Monroe Locker moved to San Saba County in the winter of 1889 where
he continued in the cotton ginning business. The community of Locker was named for him.

Two of his sons became medical doctors:
Samuel Browning, who practiced in Menard, and Harry Loy, who practiced in Brownwood.
Both of these physicians were in the Army Medical Corps during World War I.
The two sons and only children of Harry L. Locker served in the Dental and Medical
divisions of the Army during World War II. After the war they both practiced in Brownwood. Lewis Houston Locker, D.D.S., was born in 1908. He died in 1983. Braswell
Locker, M.D., was born in 1914.

This brief and incomplete history is submitted by Braswell Locker. I am proud of my
heritage and the part my grandfather and great-grandfather had in the founding of
Bosque County and the contributions made to their communities during their lifetimes.
I am proud of my father, Harry L. Locker, who devoted his life to the practice of
medicine, beginning in the horse-and-buggy days. He was an active member of the Texas
Medical Association serving as vice-president of that organization at one time. He was an
avid opponent of socialized medicine and an outspoken advocate of free enterprise. He,
too, was born in Bosque County. Following in the footsteps he so emphatically made for
me, I have been privileged to serve my fellowman as physician and my profession as
president of its state organization as well as delegate to the American Medical Association.

My wife, the former Billie Sigler of Mephis, Texas, and I have four children: Braswell, Jr. of Brownwood; Dan Lewis, M.D.,
surgeon in the U.S.A.F.; Jenifer Locker Zipp, Midlothian; and David Sigler, pilot in the U.S.A.F.
by Braswell Locker, M.D."
