115 Squadron's Avro Lancaster I (#HK595) aircraft took off during the day-time from RAF Witchford, with an aircrew of nine [a higher than usual number of crew for a Lancaster: but a second pilot and a third air gunner had been included]. The flight was for an air operation over the oil plant in Dortmund, Germany. Tragically HK595 collided over Germany in mid-air with 115 Squadron's Lancaster (#NN706): all the aircrew of both aircraft lost their lives.
