GRANTSVILLE — Sweet Momma; who birthed nine perfect babies, who fed each one at her breast and later from her garden, who schooled them all at her kitchen table, who loved them tenderly and taught each one to cook and sew and most of all to love. Nina Lynn (Hoy) Porter who was born on July 30th, 1963 spent 52 years enriching the lives of everyone she touched. The most wonderful wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend passed away with her husband, mother, sister and all her children by her side on Aug. 27th, 2015.

Anyone who knew Nina well can picture her with a baby on her hip bouncing around the kitchen from desk to desk teaching her preschool through high school age children. She would pop out to the garden during recess and pull some weeds and pick zucchini for her famous zucchini bread that she would make later in a batch of 6 or 8 loaves. All the while the house would be filled with the delicious aroma of homemade marinara sauce simmering on the stove and perhaps a birthday cake for one of us baking in the oven. Jellies, Jams and preserves stocked her cellar because she couldn't stand to see anything go to waste. During the summer you could find her with 5 or more children in tow gleaning green beans from the edges of the commercial fields where the pickers couldn't reach. The joy she took in these tasks inspired many mothers who had an interest in home schooling. They would look at mom and say, well if Nina can homeschool all nine of her children all the way through high school, then I guess I can too!

32 years of motherhood, 32 years of little hearts overflowing with gratitude. Trinkets of adoration crafted by little hands fill her house the way she has filled all of our hearts. Wood burning projects made by industrious young ones, clay vases that don't hold water made in freshman ceramics class, messily written poems, a shadow box full of trinkets only a mother could love, jewelry boxes filled not with expensive jewels but with baubles picked out by little hands that proudly clutched their dollars bills and marched gleefully to the dollar store each Mother's Day.

The home office she shared with her husband, Daniel Nathan Porter is lined with shelves filled with scrapbook after scrapbook of family photos that lovingly document the growth of her brood that she poured her heart, soul and essence into. Passionate about preserving memories, Nina was behind the camera much more than she was in front of it. Her tender touch can be felt in each page of each scrapbook that she lovingly crafted, journaling the chronologies of the life of her husband and nine children.

Momma lived the message of her Lord and savior Jesus Christ every day. She always put the needs of her family before her own, joyfully, lovingly, wholeheartedly. There was no one better in this world to cuddle up to than Momma when we were sick or tired or sad. Momma was always there with her arms open and a sympathetic ear and probably a big pot of beef and barley soup. Momma was known for her amazing soups...and her perfect pie crusts. At home, she showered us with homemade pies, fresh baked bread and southern style home cooked meals. She did much of her baking and cooking while dancing around the giant island counter that she always insisted on having in her kitchens. Mom loved to dance. She did cartwheels and the splits and left the little girls with dreams of being prima ballerinas just like mommy.

Nina Grace, Momma's youngest and her namesake said it best on the day that mommy passed. She looked up through her tear soaked eyes and said simply, "Momma was my favorite person."

Well Momma, you were a lot of people's favorite person, we love you endlessly. Keep on dancing.

Friends will be received at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., in the Grantsville Cemetery with Daniel Porter officiating.
