Hugh Columbus Singleton, 90, of 9 Deerfield Road, Parlin, NJ, died on Thursday, July 27, 1978 at the Queen of Carmel Nursing Home in Marlboro. He was a former health officer and a member of the Board of Health for 56 consecutive years. Hugh was born in Tennessee and lived in Parlin since 1915. He was an Army veteran of World War I, receiving most of his health training prior to the war while stationed at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington for 3 years. In 1920, the borough's first mayor, John Quaid, appointed him to the newly created Board of Health. Hugh served with the Coast Guard during World War II and was stationed at Sandy Hook. Before retiring in 1947, he had been an X-ray technician and manager of the E.I. duPont Company first aid station for 33 years. Before retiring again in 1970, Hugh also served as a health officer for 50 years. He was in charge of the Sayreville Rabies Clinic for many years. Hugh was a life member of Saint Stephen's Lodge F&AM in South Amboy, the Crescent Temple in Trenton and the Shriners Salaam Temple in Newark. In addition, he was a member of the Sayreville Senior Citizens Club, Leisure Club and Historical Society, both in Sayreville, the Pinelands Cultural Society and the Albert Deer Club, both in Waretown. Beloved husband of Stella (nee Albert) Singleton. Visitation was offered on Friday, July 28, 1978 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Zamorski Funeral Home, 341 Washington Road, Sayreville, NJ 08872. The funeral services were officiated in the funeral home by the United Methodist Church Reverend John Benson on Saturday, July 29, 1978 at 11 AM. Interment followed at the Washington Monumental Cemetery in South River. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sayreville Emergency Squad, 776 Washington Road, Parlin, NJ 08859.
