Dr. Russ Lambert died peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, surrounded by his family and loved ones.
James Russell Lambert was born in Lansing, Mich., on March 21, 1929, the son of the late Rev. James Clay and Lela Reynolds Lambert. Russ graduated from Lansing East High and attended Michigan State, graduating with a degree in horticulture. After working for a period of time at Midway Airport in Chicago, he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in West Germany as an air traffic controller during the Berlin Airlift. While stationed at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, he met and married Ireta Simons, his wife of 52 years. After deciding to pursue medicine, he attended UT Galveston and graduated from UT Southwestern Medical School completing his internship at St. Joseph's Hospital in Fort Worth. In 1961 he started his 35-year career in family practice in Fort Worth. During that time, he served a term as president of the Tarrant County Academy of Family Practice. After retiring from private practice, he continued his medical career by working with All Saints Hospital and later co-founded DiagnosTex, where he worked up until the Spring of 2015. His love of family practice touched many lives and gave him the opportunity to do what he wanted most which was to build meaningful relationships with patients and their families. As a man of great faith, Russ had a lifelong passion for mission work. He served as a physician for and was actively involved with the Healing Shepherd Clinic at the Union Gospel Mission, serving the homeless. Russ and his much-loved wife, Ireta, made several medical mission trips to Haiti and supported countless missionaries around the world. His commitment to the well-being of others was not limited to the patients he served; it also extended to the many people whom he cherished and supported. Above all else, Russ was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family unconditionally and served as a pillar of strength and support. Time together with his family was very special to him. With Ireta by his side, their greatest joys were taking family trips, gathering around the dinner table and staying actively involved in the lives of their grandchildren. Up until two days before he was hospitalized, he shared weekly Sunday night dinners with his entire family. After the loss of his beloved wife Ireta, Russ was blessed to find love again with Patricia Purvis. They enjoyed six wonderful years together full of laughter, travel and puzzles. Most precious were the countless trips they took to visit their grandchildren and to England where they shared a love of Anglo-Saxon churches. The family expresses deep appreciation for the loving care given by Pam McNeil, Laura Green and Leona Joshua.
Dr. Lambert was preceded in death by his wife, Ireta.
Survivors: His children, Lizabeth Lambert Bowden, Vance Simons Lambert, Hayley Lambert Conway and her husband, Jon Mark Conway; grandchildren, Zara Simons Bowden, Peter Lambert Bowden and William Vance Conway; and his cherished friend, Patricia Purvis.
