Howard Watson, 84, of Choteau Dies Saturday
After a long, varied and useful career, Howard Watson passed away here last Saturday due to the infirmities of old age. Funeral services were held from the Choteau Methodist church. Interment was in the family plot in Choteau cemetery.
Mr. Watson was born Feb. 3, 1860, at Richmond, Indiana, the son of Elizabeth and James Watson. He remembered the Civil war distinctly and was able to recall vividly many of the trials and tribulations that beset the country in those days and in the reconstruction period.
His boyhood and young manhood days were spent on a farm in Wayne county three miles south of Richmond. In Sept. 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Katherine Kranskoff and to this union five daughters and one son were born. One daughter, Victoria, died in infancy. The eldest daughter, Amy (Mrs. J.K. Benbow), died in Feb. 1925. His wife passed away at the home in Choteau on Sept. 22, 1941.
The survivors are two sisters Idelle B. Watson of Biloxi, Miss., and Lake G. Watson of Sheyenne, N.D.; three daughters, Mrs. Robert Van Scherpenzeel, Miss Lake P. Watson, and Ruth Watson, all of Choteau; and one son, James E. Watson of Anaconda.
Mr. Watson and family farmed in Indiana until 1910. He then joined the homestead rush to Montana and took up a dryland farm 12 miles northwest of Big Sandy in Choteau county. Quitting the homestead in 1928 after 18 years of successful wheat growing, the family moved to Virgelle, where Mr. Watson also engaged in farming operations. In 1936, the family moved to Choteau and resided in a cottage on north Main avenue adjacent to the city's water pumping station.
Mr. Watson's last days were spent in the quiet of his home here and many folks knew and esteemed the old gentleman. Especially after the passing of his wife, he was given to solitary strolls and was a familiar figure on the streets of Choteau. At the time of his death he was 84 years, 10 months and 22 days old.
