Former police officer dies, funeral Monday
Funeral services for Frank G. Hughes, 67, resident of Colorado Springs 48 years, who died yesterday after an illness of two years, will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Law drawing room. Rev. Daniel D. Williams and Rev. Adna W. Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Hughes, who had at one time been a member of the police force and fire department, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Hughes of Pagosa Springs; three sons, Carl Hughes of Miami, Ariz.; William Hughes of Colorado Springs and Jack Hughes of Bayfield, Colo., and two daughters, Mrs. Jennie June Lynch and Charlotte Hughes of Pagosa Springs. Mrs. J.M. Hughes of Colorado Springs, mother of Mr. Hughes, also survives and there are two brothers, E.B. Hughes of Gooding, Ida., and C.H. Hughes of Denver.

Colorado Springs Death Register, Vol 1, p. 127 -- Died 19 Feb 1896, Lizzie Hughes, age 26, female, white, married, cause of death - chronic morphine poisoning, place of death - Colorado Springs.

NOTES: Special police officer was an unpaid job that could be converted to a paid position only by vote.
Frank was a driver for the Fire Dept from 4/15/1899 to 12/8/1899 working 28 days a month for 21 hours a day at a salary of about $100 a month.
