Masonic honors were paid Virgil B. Davis, Sr. who died on Saturday, March 19, 1932 following an illness of four months. During his illness - Bright's Disease - a valiant struggle was made and he entered the Veterans' hospital at Muskogee, where all possible was done in his behalf. He had just returned on Friday to his home on East Osage Ave. in McAlester, where he passed away in peaceful sleep. Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church and interment was in the Masonic section of Oak Hill cemetery.
For approximately 20 years Davis was connected with the Griffin Grocer Company, and in his later years he was manager of the wholesale house of that company.
Virgil Bernard Davis was a son of Joe. C. and Ella L. Davis. He was born at Sparta, Mississippi on October 17, 1895, and moved to McAlester soon after his graduation from the Houston, Mississippi high school at the age of 16. He was married July 28, 1917 to Miss Nell Cloyd, who, with their son Virgil, Jr., survived him.
Mr. Davis was a member of the Methodist church until changing membership to the Christian church. He was a consistent worker in the ranks, having joined the church when 12 years old.
Having served in the first World War, he held membership in the American Legion and was quite active in Rupert Harrison post No. 79 and in the local chapter of the 40 and 8. He was a member of Masonic lodge No. 9 at old town and also of the Scottish Rite bodies, where he was a 32nd degree member.
Besides his wife and son, his passing was mourned by his mother, two brothers and three sisters. His father preceded him in death.
