August Witt was the son of Johann Witt and Anna Resform. He was born in Łęczyce (formerly Bismark, kreis Lauenburg, Pomerania) and baptized in Lusin, West Prussia (Luzino). In 1836, he married the widow Barbara Ptach (née Wielestowska) in Luzino. They did not have any children together.
August and Barbara immigrated to the U.S., probably in the 1870's. They settled in Chicago, in the St. Stanislaus Kostka parish (Chicago's first Polish parish).
August's brother Frank and half-brother Ferdinand had come to Illinois earlier, but they both settled in Missouri.
