James W. Rentchler, former legislator, who served five consecutive terms from 1914 to 1924 as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from St. Clair county, died at his home, 700 East C street at 6:15 o'clock last night from complications which forced him to be confined to his home for the last four weeks.

Mr. Rentchler was the son of the late John and Lucy Jane Rentchler, nee Adams. His grandparents founded the town of Rentchler, Ill. James W. Rentchler was born on a farm at Mt. Vernon, Ill., October 22, 1856, and would have been seventy-three years of age this coming October. He attended the rural schools of St. Clair county and the public schools of Belleville, later studying commercial law and bookkeeping in a Commercial College in St. Louis.

For many years during his early career he was connected with the Rentchler Grain and Drill Works of St. Clair county, later becoming cashier of the freight department of the St. Louis Bridge and Tunnel Company, operating the Eads bridge. Subsequently he moved to Mt. Vernon, where he operated a general store for several years. Mr. Rentchler also conducted a general store at Opdyke, Ill.

He has lived in Belleville since 1893 and was interested in coal, farming and real estate. Prior to his election to the Illinois House of Representatives he served for seven years as a member of the St. Clair County Board of Review.

When his health failed him after his fifth term as a member of the Illinois House, he retired from active political life. Mr. Rentchler was united in marriage in Belleville, Ill., August 3, 1898 with Miss Josephine Gross, daughter of the late Robert and Elise Gross. Mrs. Rentchler who is a very prominent woman and a former society and club leader is in charge of the Safety Deposit Department of the Belleville Savings Bank.

Besides his widow, four daughters remain to mourn Mr. Rentchler's loss:

Frieda, wife of L. A. Wiedman, Norman, Okla.
Miss Frances Rentchler, New York City
Miss Janice W. Rentchler, Pittsburgh, Pa.

The grandchildren are Elaine Wright, Marcia Kerr, and Hugh James Davis, children of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Davis and Wayne Rentchler Wiedman, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Wiedman.

One brother, one half-brother and two sisters survive:

Mr. Rentchler was a member of the Masons, of the Odd Fellows, and the Modern Woodmen. The funeral in charge of the Masons will take place Saturday at 3 o'clock from the residence, 700 East C. street to Green Mount Cemetery. Rev. John Garner of Joplin, Mo., former pastor of the Presbyterian church in Belleville, and an old friend of the family, who happens to be vacationing at the present time in St. Louis, will be in charge of the services. The remains of Mr. Rentchler will be removed to his home from the Gundlach Funeral Parlors at 4 o'clock this afternoon.
