With his brother, Edward "Eddy" P. Rogers, he founded and incorporated the Excelsior Foundry Company in Belleville on January 1, 1892. The foundry, now (1941) located at 1200 East B Street, is operated by a nephew, Frank B. Rogers, since the death of Edward P., and the retirement of George B. M. Rogers. The foundry had its inception on January 1, 1891, when it was named the Rogers Brothers and established on South third Street.
Mr. Rogers was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on September 10, 1862, and was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rogers, nee Laura Fairchild. His mother was a native of Dayton, O.
His father, a native of Ireland, was of Scotch extraction and learned the molder's trade from his father, William Rogers, a foundry man. The family came to the United States when Robert was three years old and settled in Hanover, Ind. Following his marriage to Miss Fairchild he worked at the foundry business in Cincinnati and Hamilton, moving to Belleville with his family in 1876. He immediately organized organized the city's first foundry which later became known as the Rogers' Foundry and Stove Works. He sold his interest in the foundry to his sons on January 1, 1892.
George B. M. Rogers was educated in Cincinnati and Indianapolis and attended the Bryant and Stratton business College in St. Louis. He married Anna E. Rentchler, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Rentchler on December 1, 1885.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters:
~ George-Anna, wife of Arthur Jones, 3201 West Main St., Belleville, Ill.
~ Irene, wife of Kenneth Wagner, 500 South Missouri Ave., Belleville, Ill.
... a sister, Mrs. Bessie Piersoll, Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren [private]; and two great-grandchildren [private].
Three brothers, Edward P., Charles G., and Robert D. Rogers and a sister, Ida, wife of Samuel Hyde, preceded him in death.
Mr. Rogers served for 20 years as president of the First National Bank and a number of terms as president of the Illinois Manufacturers' Association. He likewise was an elder and the oldest active member of the First Presbyterian church. Funeral Wednesday from Renner to the Green Mount Cemetery.
