Mr. Hamill for many years was one of the most prominent attorneys in Southern Illinois. He practiced law in Belleville for nearly all of his active career and represented a number of large corporations and railroads. He was reputed to be one of Belleville's wealthiest citizens.
Funeral services for James M. Hamill, wealthy local attorney, and for many years general counsel for the L & N Railroad, who died Saturday, were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. rev. J. H. Jones, pastor of the First M. E. Church, and Rev. O. H. Clark of East st. Louis preached. Interment was at Green Mount Cemetery.
Mr. Hamill was a native of Ireland. His parents settled on a farm near Freeburg. He was a graduate of McKendree College of Lebanon, Ill., and was a veteran in the Civil war, serving in the 117th Illinois Infantry Regiment. Since 1871 he held the office of district attorney for the L & N Railroad Co., and from 1900 to 1910 was district attorney for the Terminal Railroad Co., of St. Louis.
