The Canonsburg Weekly Notes (Canonsburg, Pennsylvania) Aug, 30, 1890. Saturday - page 2.

John McMillan, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens of North Strabane township, died suddenly at Saturday, August 23. The particulars of his death as we have gathered are as follows: He started out with his team and wagon about 10 o'clock to repair a piece of fence. At noon he did not come home for his dinner, and when his son-in-law, James Speer, of the South Side, this place, stopped at the family residence abut 3 o'clock, on his way home from the funeral of Richard Fife, he was informed that Mr. McMillan had not been to dinner, and went in search of him. He found him reclining against a tree and dead. His team was standing a few rods away. From the fact that but little work had been done at the fence, it is believed that he died soon after going out, or between 10 and 11 o'clock.
The funeral, which took place on Monday, is said by North Strabane people to have been the largest seen in that township for years. The deceased was a grandson of old Dr. McMillan, the pioneer Presbyterian preacher of Western Pennsylvania, and a half-brother of Samuel McMillan, of this place. The deceased was a blacksmith by trade, and served an apprenticeship under Henry Havlin, near where Houstonville now stands, some 60 years ago. He was a consistent member of the Hill Presbyterian church, and the funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. F. Hill. Interment at the Hill church burning grounds. He was aged 79 years and four months.
