Alexander N. Brainard, 88, of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, passed away July 14, 2015. He was the husband of June (Fritzinger) Brainard.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late Ira Fitch Brainard and Antoinette (Nash) Brainard.

A US Navy Veteran, he served as a seaman on the aircraft carrier Sidor during WWII.

He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering from Syracuse University in 1951.

He married the late Suzanne Alderman Brainard in 1952 and had four children with her: Stephen Nash Brainard, of Tennessee, Jeffrey Michael Brainard of Massachusetts, L. Arlyne Brainard and Lily S. Brainard, both of Connecticut. That marriage ended in divorce in 1975.

His first job was for 3 years with Creole Petroleum Corp. in Venezuela, South America, a Division of Standard Oil of New Jersey

Mr. Brainard then joined General Foods Corporation and worked in progressive jobs to become the President of Birds Eye Frozen Food Division. He then joined Consolidated Cigar Corporation, a subsidiary of Gulf and Western, as President and worked with them for 13 years before retiring to Newport, RI. After his retirement he started a boat manufacturing business in Bristol, Rhode Island with his two sons.

An avid sailor, he was self taught on sailing skills, raced sailboats competitively and gradually enjoyed cruising. He was an avid member of the American Yacht Club in Rye, New York and served on their executive committee for several years. He also enjoyed playing golf and going skiing. He enjoyed traveling the world and saw many different locations and different cultures during his years in business. Along the way, he found a love for Bullfighting in Spain, and identified with the free spirited seagull, naming several of his boats "Jonathan Livingston Seagull".

In addition to leaving behind his 4 children, and a daughter in law, Laurey Smith Brainard, he leaves two sisters, Betty Reed, of Rye, New York, and Ann Robbins, of Wilmington, North Carolina; and four grandchildren, Douglas Nash Brainard, Abigail Stephens Brainard, Katherine Nash Brainard, and Christina Erin Brainard.

His funeral and burial were private.
