Ballard served as a Staff Sergeant & Right Waist Gunner on B-24H "Miasis Dragon" (#42-52172), 715th Bomber Squadron, 449th Bomber Group, Fifteenth Air Force, U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He resided in Dade County, Florida prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on December 11, 1942 at Camp Blanding, Florida. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a sheet metal worker & also as Single, without dependents.

Ballard was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 has hit by enemy planes during a bombing mission over Bucharest, Romania and crashed during the War. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
