___________
J. Cooney, a pioneer merchant of Nashville, and perhaps the oldest business man in the city actively engaged in conducting his business, died at 6 o'clock last night at the residence of his son, C. P. Cooney, 1802 Hayes street. Mr. Cooney had been ill the last three months. He was 83 years old. Since 1868 he has been head of the firm of J. Cooney & Co., wholesales grocers, at 164 Second Avenue, North.
A Conservative man in his business dealings, he was quite successful, and has been connected with a large number of enterprises. He was a director and a member of the executive committee of the old Capital City bank, and a director of the Merchants; National bank. Coming to Nashville from Paris, Tenn., in 1866 he had watched the city grow to a metropolis and had outlived the great majority of his former business colleagues.
Mr. Cooney was born and reared at Paris, and was a son of T. Cooney, a prominent business man of Henry county. He was the eldest of a large family. He married Miss Jennie Catherine Lougee, of Louisville, Ky., who died in 1882. Removing, from Paris, where he had been associated with his father in business, to Nashville, Mr. Cooney established the firm which still bears the name he then gave it. Associated with him were his three sons. Until his illness three months ago, he was its active head.
Mr. Cooney was a Lifelong member of the Masonic fraternity, and at his death was affiliated with Phoenix Lodge, of Nashville. He was a charter member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.
Surviving are three sons -- Arthur D., Charles P. and Stanley T. Cooney; five grandsons -- C. P. , Jr., Robert G., W. Victor, Arthur C. Cooney, Jr., and Will Morris Cowden. His daughter, who died in 1892, was the wife of W. W. Cowden, of Lewisburg, Tenn. One son, John L. Cooney, died in 1893. A. B. Lamb, of Paris, is a nephew, and Mrs. James D. Porter, of Nashville, a cousin of Mr. Cooney.
Funeral arrangements had not been made last night.
